Edgar Degas (1834-1917)
Repetition d’un ballet sur la scene is a painting which illustrates a glance of young ballerinas in their downtime. In the painting, the viewers notice some girls practicing techniques, stretching, yawning, and some in their own world. Most of the time when you see a ballet dancer, they are well poise, structure, uniform and lack emotion in their faces. Here in the painting, it shows the ballerinas’ personalities, human qualities, and what they do when no one is looking. The light pastel colors show the youth and life in the ballerinas. Degas is careful with his shading techniques making it look very natural, real, and show movement. Degas was consider one of the founders of impressionist painting however he disregard the term, instead considering himself to be a realist. In his paintings, you see the how he brings his subjects to life. This is why I enjoy this piece of art.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, part of the Fauvism movement. He is considered as one of the greatest artist in 20th century. In this self-portrait, vivid colors are shown which could represent his youth. And the movements in the strokes are short and concise.
